“S.A.P.” on his grand-uncle G. Venkatasubbaiah, the centenarian who edited the 9,000-page, 8-volume Kannada encyclopaedia and presided over the Kannada sahitya sammelana in Bangalore last year, in The Economist, London:
“To hear Venkatasubbaiah tell it, Kannada is threatened, but the situation is not grave. ‘Our modern literature is full of life. And Kannada has an ancient literature of great quality—especially epics and poetry. We are not going anywhere,’ he said. But if Kannada’s favoured position in Bangalore is at risk, he says, the state government is to blame. Most politicians in Karnataka speak Kannada as a first language, but their advocacy efforts are limp….
“He believes Kannada can be promoted alongside, and not to the exclusion of, languages like Hindi and English. He suggests that the government should strengthen primary education language requirements and sponsor more programs that instill in Kannada-speakers a sense of pride in their language….
“Venkatasubbiah recognises that his world is changing. But he is not motivated by the sort of aggrieved conservatism that characterises so many older linguistic commentators. He knows better: language changes. So even while he documents the influx of Hindi and English into the Kannada of his fellow Bangaloreans, he doesn’t despair.
“‘This trend isn’t of any evil consequence. Hindi and English borrowings have already been assimilated, welcomed into the local tongue,’ he wrote in an email.
“Yet he isn’t complacent. ‘Bangalore is changing. Hindi, Urdu, English, Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, and Marwari are the languages heard on our streets,’ he said. His is, ideally, a Kannada city. ‘The multilingual quality of our Bangalore can be a great advantage, but no scheme would ever be complete without Kannada. If nothing is done, I am afraid that Kannada will be pushed back into second place here.’

There is no doubt that Kannada and local culture is under threat. Cosmopolitan city and all that is nice, but those who come from outside should assimilate by learning the language and respecting the local culture. When that doesn’t happen and when the Kannadiga population keeps falling, we will have lumpen elements like KaRaVe running riot.
The chances of an MSN-Sena type attacks on linguistic minorities looms ahead. The only solution is to enter into constructive dialogs with linguistic minorities and make them appreciate the importance of assimilating.

Deepak,
A better way is to speak in kannada with the migrants,,,this should force them to learn kannada…this is how migrants to tamilnadu and andhra pradesh learn the languages there. I have seen a trend in kannada parents of encouraging their kids to speak in english even at home…this is a sad development.

Kannada is not threatened by outsiders but by their own who are lazy, hence economically backward. They have learnt to suck up to their bosses who are outsiders, but hard working. Kannadigas have found it easy this way, as the Sanskrit saying goes ” nirlajja sadaa suki”. This is the case in every sphere of kannadigas life , be it politics, education or business. We are worst kind to have walked this earth.

Work permits for inter state migration is the only solution to preserve diversity and federal structure of India. Seeing the sentiments of majority of Indians of different linguistic origin, this may become a reality faster than expected.
Forceful Hindi implementation is also threatening southern languages at the administrative level .
Till today no efforts have been made in north Indian educational institutions to teach atleast one southern language or Marathi or Gujarati. South Indians have to yield and cede their identity to northies, but northies will not respect south Indian language and culture, this is unfortunate.

Pale-Kannada is very similar to Tamil spoken at home. Chennai Tamil is for laborers.

Gee Vee sir great, there will be no need for his dictionaries/work if present situation continues. He has a valid reason(& atmosphere)to worry.
As I wrote in my some of my previous posts(elsewhere in this blog),
There should be an easy way( and system) to use Kannada in everyday business activities, government departments , even in common day to day communication ( websites, email, text messages),
This sounds foolish but there should be some incentive to use Kannada wherever and whenever possible.
Kannada fonts and software should be easily available ( and free, encourage software developers I don’t why they don’t give G category sites to people like Baraha Vasu, Pavanaja etc where as CM’s cook gets it)
There are lot of Private Entrepreneurs(with few exceptions like NRN)/ NRI’s who are more concerned with state of Kannada and want to preserve and develop Kannada, Please encourage them, recognize them, wherever possible help them with financial assistance.
Lastly, our dear V Bhat, RB, Pratap simha,( just to name a few journos) instead of fighting among themselves, do something to develop Kannada ( in addition to increasing their fleet of cars and houses!)
Make some real Kannada loving personality ( non corrupt, independent, is there anybody now?) as minister for Kannada development. A person like Gee Vee is a right choice albeit younger.
just today government promised to to give 5 crores to Kannada sahithya parishath!!! I don’t how will this help? Has any body read ” kannada nudi” published by Ka Sa Pa. Encouraging migrants to converse in Kannada can go a long way in preserving the language. Kannada has many common elements with all other South Indian languages as well as with Marathi and Hindi. Therefore it should not be too difficult for migrants to follow even if they cannot speak it fluently. A simple look up dictionary for the most common words can prove to be very handy if it is available on cell phones and on the Internet. In Bengaluru and some other major cities of Karnataka, the language of business is not exclusively Kannada, therefore migrants are not required to learn it. Having simple tools and encouraging basic conversation in the language can result in more people adopting Kannada.

I think preserving a language and culture is a serious issue to be debated without any sarcasm. If Kannada is slowly disappearing in Bangalore, only Kannadigas are to be blamed, none other. Safeguarding a language is the responsibility of the locals. You cannot expect outsiders to start talking in local language the moment they land in Bangalore. I am a Central Government employee having worked in five different states. When the ‘outsiders’ are working in Tamil Nadu or Kerala or North, within 2-3 years, they start speaking in local language even if they are not able to speak fluent. But when the same ‘outsiders’ are in Bangalore or Mysore, even after 10 years, they don’t speak even one sentence. Why? Because, we the Kannadigas always speak to them in their languages and we hardly allow them to learn our language. But then we blame them for not speaking Kannada! We blame Tamilians, we call names. But I respect them for one thing. They are very proud of their language and culture and they have been able to steadfastly resist imposition of Hindi.
Secondly, all the educational institutions must compulsorily include Kannada as one of the subjects to be studied till 10th standard.
@ Dr. Ramesh sir, in a democractic country like ours, work permits are totally illogical and impossible. And how is it going to promote Kannada?!

Here are some home truths – As a tamil, I find especially the rich/upper middle and forward castes of the kannadigas ( barring coastal) as the most insecured, complaining and stingy lot.Where as the poor kannadigas like other poor in India are always cheerful, generous and accomodating. This insecurity of the learned kannadigas is fascinating because I do not come across similar attitude when I lived/travel in kerala or andrapradesh.Like all linguist states, karnataka too has made kannada mandatory in all shop display boards, street names, government documents. Why are you guys still moaning? As for influx of outsiders, i find that you guys are more accomodative to the Mumbai/punjabi business crowd who even after 30 years of living in this city have bugger all knowledge on Kannada where as the tamil, telugu and malayali migrants have made excellent attempts to speak and even read and write kannada. So why this blind spot of choosing to ignore the obvious and cry on not so problamatic? Finally all kannadigas especially the language chauvunists must understand that there is tremendous mobility of people from one corner to other. It is more evident in metropolitan cities and major cities.Bengaluru is no exception. If you go to Chennai, especially the new suburbs you will be surprised that hindi is the most spoken language.Chenaai historically has more telugu speaking people than even tamil.Without understanding what India is, please don’t go on moaning.Your language is safe, many like me have learned to read and write it.I enjoy reading all kannada classics the same way as you do.Take off your insecurity, get a life and start living.

2) What exactly is Kannada culture? Is it Tulu culture, or Hubli , or Gulbarga or Mysore culture?
3) How is Kannada culture different from say Telugu culture?
> those who come from outside should assimilate
4) What if ‘non-Kannada Indians’ are in Karnataka temporarily?
5) Should ‘non-Kannada Indians’ start assimilating from Day 1 or after 5 months or 5 years?
> Cosmopolitan city and all that is nice, but by learning the language and respecting the local culture.
6) Aren’t they doing it? Who is not respecting ‘local’ culture?
7) If they are not doing it, why are you tolerating them? Why don’t you build a system where they cannot survive without learning Kannada?
> Kannadiga population keeps falling,
8) Is there any stats to show that Kannada speaking population is falling in Bangalore?

I whole-heartedly agree with shiv.
I have travelled widely mostly in diverse groups. While any Malayali or Tamilian or Telugu is glad & happy to hear his lingo in a remote place, a Kannadiga would dread that thought.
I discussed this thought with my group and found a startling reason. While other language speaker would stop at knowing the place, education, Kannadigas have just one thought in mind – ನೀವು ಯಾವ ಜನ? – basically to know the caste (and have an ego boost after knowing the other person is below him in the rank).
Earlier this trait was typical of Brahmins & Lingayaths (who had money and hence could travel). Now Vokkaligas have joined the party.
While a ‘forward’ caste Tamilian & a ‘backward’ caste Tamilian will get along, a ‘forward’ caste Kannadiga will never get along a ‘backward’ caste Kannadiga – they just don’t accept who hasn’t gone through upanayana.
As long as Kannadigas don’t come out of their Public Display of Casteism, Kannadigas will fear speaking their language – both at away & home.

I have collected seven sample cases from Mangaloreans, all the same behavior. I talked to a few industrialists I know who come across a lot of Mangloreans. Their take is they hel pthei rkith and kin, and are jealous of others progress. Someone else mentioned that the whole belt from Mangalore to Kerala is like that.
I found these people to be sharp in observation, they have honed their calculating skills, but the decisions they make are devious. I narrowed it to diet. They eat a lot of Fish, omega-6 fatty acids, it helps nueral firing, but too much furing short-circuits the thought process, much like the Jews. Also they lack a balanced diet as they lack fruits and vegetable s and cereals available to the rest. Just visit a Mangalore store its all roots etc.

1: Which kannada culture are you talking about? The Hodi-badi-maga kannada or the more cultured one?
2: I’ll tell you my own story in brief, as a hublian i found it oddly strange to discover the way people made fun of my kannada in bangalore! Since, I can speak fluent hindi, I spoke hindi in bangalore for more than 6 years! Now, you tell me that i should speak kannada?! Isn’t that hypocritical?
3: What about behaviour of kannadigas? You will only find badly behaved and unfriendly people who have only one culture, stare stare and stare. The ones who propagate about having culture and good behaviour look rigid and very unapproachable.
4. In hubli, i have witnessed how real kannada, culture and behaviour got destroyed by use of foul words. Now, the situation is that everyone uses bad words and expressions casually. Let me not go into the aspects of hubli behaviour, it is well known.
5: Check out the movies made in sandalwood, even some old ones. There is excess use of vulgarity & foul language. Except for a handful of old actors there isn’t much to watch. I watched a kannada movie 6 years ago which was filled with casteism & vulgarity. I don’t want my kids in the future to watch such things and become one.
6: The recent bashing up of women in mangalore is perhaps the best example of contemporary kannada culture.
Conclusion: The real kannada culture was destroyed long time ago, now you have this disgusting culture. Sorry, for being very blunt but my beliefs have taken shape after numerous experiences.

@dear all Kannadigas,
Please stop worrying about Kannada. Kannada has survived 2000 years without any of your efforts. There is no reason why it can’t survive another 2000 years. There are certain elements who get excited by urban legends and create FUD. Don’t heed to them. Certainly don’t listen to lip-service from Sandalwood – they are out there to sell their movies.
One thing you can certainly do is to *respect* and *accept* a fellow Kannada speaking person. That is all what is required.
@Deepak,
Since you didn’t get back with answers, I can safely assume that you just ‘parrot’ FUD created by urban legends folks.
*FUD – Fear, uncertainty and doubt (tactic used in propaganda)
*Urban Legend – contemporary myth (backed by believable stories, but false).

Current Cosmopolitan culture in Bangalore is in fact a boon(in blessing, may be) for the upliftment or spreading of Kannada! To think practically, only because of this population inflow from other states and multilingual society, others are atleast making an attempt to learn kannada , though they may not have passion towards it.
We can see so many mallus, Tamils, and Northies attempting to speak at least broken kannada, when they have to deal with Government offices, vegetable vendors, cable operators, Auto rickshaws, taxis, in Bar and restaurants etc , not to forget non-kannadiga Businessmen converse in Kannada with kannadiga customers…There may be few exceptions, about whom its less talked the better for our temper!
But then again, it all depends on how we kannadigas or even the Goverment use this opportunity for propagating kannada.

So in summary, though kannada may be pushed back a bit for various reasons which all know, there is no need to press the panic button using harsh phrases like the uprooting or demise or extinction of kannada etc. Though Kannada may be less spoken in bangalore, it can never diminish or lose its existence.
There is no need to feel too insecure or emotional, just by looking at the number ratio of non kannadigas to kannadigas, or by the communication language we observe in IT companies or malls or movies or even our streets!

@ Frewill I agree that Kannada culture in Bangalore is “stare stare and stare”, they never mind their own business. Most of the Bangaloreans speak Kannada but all of them are not Kannadigas, they are non kannadiags who grew up here and also the young bangalore too has no respect towards north Karnataka Kannada, they very cautiously learn different dialects of US English and slang, but have little respect towards the language of this land, their parents and the schools are also to be blamed they teach speaking Hindi makes them Indian with no boundaries, they’re living in the myth that Hindi is our national language and speaking in Kannada sort of makes them a threat to national integrity, lol.
@Shridharaswamy While I was talking to one of my Konkani friend from Manipal Institute of Tech. he said the belief that coastal people are brainy is a myth, his analysis was that the soil of coast is not enough fertile for refined agriculture and the people naturally got into business and banking. And like you said many here believe that coastal people have that traitorousness and are not the ones to be trusted that easily, with all the due respect to numerous Kannada laureates from the coast, but the common coast man is of a different kind.

Shree Kar sir, excellent point sir. i have spent my years in madikeri and mlore. so i know the culture of both places. believe me, kannada culture is better preserved in those places. since i was in a nice pocket of karunadu, i didn’t know abt decaying kannada culture and language. when i went to chennai for my first job, i got a rude shock. 2 yrs later, i switched to blore and was happy to return to k’taka. i found that blore is anything but kannada.
the kanglish is nauseating, to say the least. i prefer the mlorean maaraya suffix to the macha crap. then i did some introspection and realized that even i had been mixing english words in kannada. since then, i have been trying to speak only in chaste kannada. “ondu bhashe satata balakeyinda jeevantha irabahudu”, look what has happened to sanskrit. non usage has killed it.
my suggestion, atleast in the sphere of education is: in school we shud have maths, science in english since there are many scientific terms n stuff that will be diificult to assimilate in later studies if initially studied in kannada.
let social science be in kannada, since there is lesser technical jargon. then we have kannada itself. english and hindi complete the group.
in schools, i have seen teachers discourage the usage of kannada among students. they shud encourage students to converse in kannada and correct them if they resort to kanglish. catch them when they are young, else “gidavaagi baggaddu maravaagi baggite?”

we are not insecure. this is how we need it.
we need it as medium of instruction
we need it to be used in public life.
we need others to learn when they come here.
we need it in administration
these are same things followed by Japan, Germany, China , Russia
and so on.
the problem with tamils is they are so much worker kinds.
what do workers want
– a film industry to cater to sexual habits.
– a fixed salary job.
– a insecurity over antiquity that they should be antics.
being anglicized and tamil-talibanized that they cannot see anything other than which fetches them money.
they are basically cowards to give time for others and most importantly they are backstabbers.

Why are Tamils, Telugus and Malayalis not cosmopolitan? If you go to Tamil Nadu or Kerala you cannot live there even for a month without learning the regional language. In Karnataka anybody can live and carry on one’s business/profession without learning Kannada. Kannadigas cannot be taken for granted forever. One fine day true Kannadigas may revolt and establish their supremacy in their land. Please stop making fun of Kannada and Kannadigas.

Here is an interesting, thought provoking read, enguru.blogspot.com
An article posted explains how the target laid down by central govt to states like karnataka for population control clearly shows that centre wants population of linguistic groups like kannadigas to come down and UP AND BIHARI population to go up in future. Hindi imposition is greater threat to Kannada than English.
National entrance test for medical education is also a grave threat for Indian federalism. Kannadigas studying in karnataka will have limited oppurtunities to pursue medicine in karnataka.

very well said:
a north indian can easily travel elsewhere given the brutal climate he/she is accustomed to but south indian will fall sick if he/she goes to north india just for studies.
this can easily be seen in case of MPs like Ambareesh and others who cannot tolerate those climates so they abandon parliament itself.
what Kapil Sibal is doing is to wind up things by next year so that he can brag and shag about in coming elections and get large share of seats cleverly for their ever burgeoning population.
Our politicians never say anything against centre as if its their duty to abide by their rules.
This is one are where Raj Thackeray and almost of south india can come together.
NIMHANS who has now the autonomy should research on north indian psyche and tell the world how they have pounced on south indian jobs and education system.

@Pulikeshi the Last, thanks for understanding the pun. The comment was specially for the lady who wants to sing ‘all is well’ when all the hell has broken loose on bengulru Kannada, she definitely has not met enough outsiders who have made Bengaluru their home, and without hesitation I’d say all of them believe speaking Kannada in front of others showcases one as of “some sort”.

Behave well with me and prove your culture is worth learning. Being a north Indian, coming to bangalore, i felt the kannada heat the moment i landed here. How do you expect an outsider to embrace your language and culture if you show such hate towards others from the starting? Make your culture likable and lovable so that people like me will automatically start picking up the language with great appreciation and interest. As of now forget anout embracing your culture and language, I am waiting for the day i can get outta here, because if the hate and rudeness that has been inflicted upon me by your community. Remember acceptance is a two way traffic. Right now i feel like kicking out all the kannads in Delhi as well as their Delhi Karnataka sangha hosted in Delhi, for the hatred i have experienced when i went to Bangalore, as soon as t i return back. Before coming here i never knew that this kind of hatred towards fellow Indians existed in the south only for over some language. I absolutely felt like a second class citizen in Bangalore in my own country. But getting back to Delhi i wont do all that, towards Kannads, as then there will be no difference between kannads and me, i will prove this way that my community knows better. where we don’t discriminate towards anybody on the basis of caste, creed, race, color, LOCATION OR “LANGUAGE”.

Now back to the main point. there are two : Bengaluru and Bangalore.
Art does not pay for my duties to my family. I therefore work and if some say i prostitute myself, so be it.
The place where i stay, for decades, know who i am, what i am and they come for advice on all matters.
Bengaluru come for advice on all matters to Bangalore.
Now this stupid debate has been going on in Churumuri since 2004 if not earlier.
Finally abuse is an art form.
You are lacking even there.

Kannadigas getting aggressive is only a natural phenomenon and logical extension.
Years of suppression, injustice has taught kannadigas to fight for their rights and to save Kannada.
Kannada activists who selflessly fight for Kannada supremacy in karnataka should be congratulated for this.
Even today northies look down upon south Indians as second class citizens, make fun about our dress, food habits, traditions, language. Sometimes they get to taste their own medicine.

There is Bangalore and Bengaluru, oh see there is manhattan and New York, and it’s just a part of New York so is Bangalore.
For us bangalore is millenium not a meager decade, and all these binary and nano languages are just its phases, BTW a good number of us is well versed in them, but Bengaluru is eternal.
Only a racist or those those who sexually(not hygienically) don’t’ even spare a rathole would find it hard to digest somebody saying Bangalore is nothing without Kannada or London is nothing without English or Paris is nothing without French.
And finally our abuse art form is contemporary and is too free.

In his mysteriously oracular style, the Colonel has a habit of not staying on the topic, but this time he appears to have gone too far. Kannadigas are a linguistic minority in Bengaluru now, but they made Bangalore possible by accepting diversity naturally. Their supposed aggressiveness and intolerance among the IT population is a most interesting myth, in part because they are a minority in it and most don’t trouble themselves about the land or the language. Mammon is our God.

In Bangalore, every locality, every block has pro Kannada organisations doing social service which also includes rajyotsava celebrations, donating books to children.
Any mischief by anti-kannada forces, they protest, give it back with out hesitation. This assertion by kannadigas has resulted in Kannada supremacy in Bangalore.
May the clan of narayan gowda and other pro Kannada soldiers increase.

There is only one Bengaluru, and Bangalore is just an anglicized version. It is in the mindset of migrants ! Kannadigas in Delhi and their Karnataka Sangha near Motibagh, speak local lingo properly. Migrants in Bengaluru feel uncomfortable identifyng with Kannada name of the city. If you dont like to respect local Kannada culture, you might as well go back to wherever you have come.
Nobody gives free advice, since some of you make money giving advice, so you give. You are not doing any charity!! If bombay can be Mumbai, Madras can be Chennai etc. Bangalore can be Bengaluru. It is Bengaluru. Bengaluru has enough Kannada knowing people. Kannada is not a minority language in Bengaluru. The English print media has many migrants as reporters in Bengaluru and end up writing about their koopamandooka style knowledge. Locals have been soft and accomodative, outsiders could flourish here. Dont try to say hardwork. Many migrants get good jobs in Bengaluru, not because of their hard work or any extra skills, but because of their networks!, I know many reporters who are useless and stupid but they end up getting those jobs bcoz of their network. I call this migrant menace!!

dear gabby one more. An extract.
“The residents of the island of New Guinea first saw the white man in 1930. The white men were strangers to New Guineans. The New Guineans had never gone to far off places and most of them lived in the vicinity of where they were born, at most making it to the top of the hill around the corner. Given this, they were under the impression that they were the only living people.
This impression turned out to be wrong and the New Guineans started to develop stories around the white men who had come visiting. Jared Diamond writes in The World Until Yesterday that the New Guineans told themselves that “Ah, these men do not belong to earth. Let’s not kill them – they are our own relatives. Those who have died before have turned white and come back.”
The New Guineans tried to place the strange looking Europeans into “known categories of their world view”. But over a period of time they did come to realise that Europeans were human after all. As Diamond writes “Two discoveries went a long way towards convincing New Guineans that Europeans really were human were that the feces scavenged from their campsite latrines looked like typical human feces (i.e., like the feces of New Guineans); and that young New Guinea girls offered to Europeans as sex partners reported that Europeans had sex organs and practiced sex much as did New Guinea men.”
To the men and women of New Guinea, Europeans were what former American defence secretary Donald Rumsfeld called the “unknown-unknown”. As Rumsfeld said “[T]here are known knows; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown-unknowns-there are things we do not know we don’t know.”
People take time to adjust to unknown-unknowns, like the New Guineans did. But there are also situations in life in which individuals, institutions and even countries tend to ignore the chance of something that they know can happen, just because it hasn’t happened in the recent past or it hasn’t happened to them specifically. For such people, institutions and countries, the option tends to become an unknown-unknown even though it is not one in the specific sense of the term.”

It’s ‘Namma Kannada’ for these Sikh kids from Rajasthan
Ramaraddy Alavandi, Raichur, Jan 14, DHNS:
Language no bar
These five children meticulously learn the Kannada alphabet as their parents busy themselves each day within the manufacture and sale of cutlery.
Their teachers at the Government Higher Primary School at KEB Colony here are thrilled that Ankit Singh, Karan Singh, Amrit Singh, Kuldeep Singh and Bharati Kaur – belonging to Sikh families hailing from Rajasthan – are learning the rudiment of the language that they have embraced as their own.
While Ankit, Amrit and Karan are in Class II, Kuldeep and Bharati are students of Class IV. Sumit, another child from Rajasthan, had studied Class I in a Hindi school, but has now joined this Kannada school for Class II.
They reside at Sunnada Bhatti area of Siya Talab extension in the city, known for the utter lack of basic amenities.
Livelihood
The Sikh families migrated six years ago to Raichur in search of a livelihood and it has been their home ever since.
The children’s parents roam across towns and cities selling frying pan, different types of knives, the implement used to make butter milk, ‘tava’ used to make roti and utensils used in dhabas.
Teachers at the school say that the children found it difficult in the initial four to five months to acclimatise themselves to the new environment. But they are now learning Kannada with great enthusiasm.
Headmaster G Thimmanna and Shankaralingappa, chairman of the School Development and Management Committee, said that they were happy with the Sikh children’s academic progress.
The Sikh children’s love for Kannada attracts attention in the light of the government’s move to merge Kannada schools having poor strength with bigger ones and the trend of parents preferring private English-medium schools

From comments of kannada haters who nevertheless want to live in Bangalore, such people are beralu kottre hasthane nungavaru.
The more hate they have the better. Let them kick all the people from Karnataka in their lands. Those ppl of Karnataka are better off coming back here rather than in the shit-lands and bad-lands of the north. They can return, and we can kick out the ungrateful, aggressive usurpers who are misusing the freedom of movement (which is the worst thing that was written in the constitution).
Anyway Bangalore has now degraded almost to the level of any north Indian hellhole of a city, due to these outsiders.
